Helene Fischman received her BFA in Painting from Boston University, her MS in Education from Cal State East Bay, and her MFA in Art from UW-Milwaukee.

Focusing on the dynamic interaction of humans with their environment, Helene has innovated site-specific artist residencies in Europe and the US, including a dozen National and State Parks resulting in mixed-media work including photography, poetry, painting & performance. Helene is the recipient of local and national grants for exhibition and travel, including the Puffin Foundation Project Grant, the Brooklyn Prize for Outstanding Artwork, and UW-Milwaukee’s Distinguished Graduate Student Fellowship.

Currently, Helene is interested in the performance of identity in a cross-disciplinary, collaborative atmosphere. She leads a collective of creatives in Milwaukee called “Draw Write Here!” who respond as a group to different cultural experiences, resulting in performances, videos, hard-copy books and online media.  In this venture, she has partnered with 53212 Presents, Goodwill Industries, The Seed Initiative, Voyageur Bookshop, Racine Correctional Institute, Jewish Museum Milwaukee, The Battery Factory, Milwaukee Art Museum and many more.
