CoPA is Pleased to Welcome Tom Bamberger
to our Monthly Member Meeting at the Hotel Metro on April 10, 2018.
Tom has been a working artist for more than four decades. His photographs have been collected and shown at many museums including the Museum of Modern Art, Art Institute of Chicago, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. His work has been reviewed in the New Yorker, Art in America, and the New York Times. Tom has received both the National Endowment for the Arts and Wisconsin Arts Board Fellowships.
Tom is also the author of many essays and publications. He has been a contributing editor for Milwaukee Magazine for more than twenty years during which time he has written hundreds of articles about the visual world that have garnered numerous honors including the Wisconsin Press Club for criticism and the White Award (the national award for city and regional magazines).
While working at the Milwaukee Art Museum as the curator of photography for ten years Tom produced more than thirty exhibitions and publications. Several of exhibitions were noteworthy: including Andreas Gursky’s, Anna and Bernhard Blume’s, and Rodney Graham’s first museum exhibitions in America (all of which traveled and were accompanied by publications).
Tom will present as topics; an anti-history of photography, the end of the history of photography as we teach it and enshrine it in museums, the art world con, and some philosophical reflections on image making.
