Call For Entries: Super-"Calatrava"-Listic Exhibition at the Art*Bar

The Quadracci Pavilion, affectionately called the "Calatrava," is probably the most photographed building in the city, and every photographer likely has at least one image of it in their portfolio. The idea behind this show is to compare how different artists/photographers "see" the building. It is an iconic structure, but every photographer has a unique "eye," and this promises to be a fascinating look into all the different kinds of ways artists are able to portray the same, highly recognizable subject.

Member Exhibition | Michael Nowotny: ART Milwaukee's "ART Jamboree - ART & Buy Local Fair"

CoPA member Michael Nowotny has been accepted to ART Milwaukee's "ART Jamboree - ART & Buy Local Fair", to be held May 18 from 2 to 10 p.m. at the Shops of Grand Avenue in downtown Milwaukee. Nowotny's photograph "Psycho Harley", not previously released, will be on exhibit in addition to several other pieces of his art.

CoPA member Michael Nowotny has been accepted to ART Milwaukee's "ART Jamboree - ART & Buy Local Fair", to be held May 18 from 2 to 10 p.m. at the Shops of Grand Avenue in downtown Milwaukee. The art fair features over 100 local visual and performing artists; 50 local vendors ranging from food, crafts, glass blowing, clothing & more; a cash bar; and $5 all-day parking for guests. There will be dance, music, theater and live art all day. The ART Jamboree is put on and produced by the Creatve Arts Council, a collaborative art advocacy group of individual artists and art organizations.

Milwaukee, TALK presents: Vivian Maier: Out of the Shadows

Milwaukee, TALK welcomes Richard Cahan, co-author of Vivian Maier: Out of the Shadows, and art collector Jeffrey Goldstein for the first in a series of visiting artist lectures.  Vivian Maier, known as "the nanny photographer," became a sensation after her work was put online soon after her death in 2009.  Since then, Maier's work has been shown throughout Europe and in major cities across the United States. Her story has been featured in major media outlets including The New York Times Lens Blog.

Milwaukee Art Museum welcomes new Curator of Photography

The Milwaukee Art Museum is pleased to announce the appointment of Lisa J. Sutcliffe as the new Curator of Photography. Sutcliffe will join the Museum in January 2013 from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, where she has served as assistant curator in the Department of Photography since 2007.

Milwaukee, Wis. – December 3, 2012 – The Milwaukee Art Museum is pleased to announce the appointment of Lisa J. Sutcliffe as the new Curator of Photography. Sutcliffe will join the Museum in January 2013 from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, where she has served as assistant curator in the Department of Photography since 2007.

Lisa Sutcliffe has a wide-ranging curatorial record from her time at SFMoMA. Most recently, she organized the SFMOMA presentation of Naoya Hatakeyama: Natural Stories in association with the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. In 2009, she organized The Provoke Era: Postwar Japanese Photography, the first survey of SFMOMA’s internationally renowned collection of Japanese photography, and Photography Now: China, Japan, Korea. Additionally, she served as assistant curator for Rineke Dijkstra: A Retrospective co-organized with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (2012); and Exposed: Voyeurism, Surveillance and the Camera Since 1870, co-organized with Tate Modern (2010).

"Surrealism and Beyond" Art Exhibition December 6th – January 17th

CoPA members Perry Heideman, Steven Yeo and Cardi Toellner participating in a mind-bending art exhibit from six local artists and photographers entitled Surrealism and Beyond. The exhibit incorporates surreal, illusory and flow of consciousness imagery that will delight, amuse and engross audiences of all ages.  At Unitarian Universalist Church West, artists' reception Thursday, December 13th, 7:00 – 8:30 pm.

Beginning December 6, 2012, the Community Room Art Gallery at Unitarian Universalist Church West will be hosting a mind-bending art exhibit from six local artists and photographers entitled Surrealism and Beyond. The exhibit incorporates surreal, illusory and flow of consciousness imagery that will delight, amuse and engross audiences of all ages.

California Zephyr, a painting by League of Milwaukee artist, Ellen FS Gilbert brings to mind the graphic, plane-shifting work of M.C. Escher. Perry Heideman’s series of photographs present a visual treat in images inspired by Lewis Carroll’s, Through the Looking Glass. Heideman is a board member of CoPA, Coalition of Photographic Artists. Steven Yeo and Cardi Toellner, also of CoPA, present striking manipulated photographs. Other art includes a watercolor by Carolyn Simpson of Wauwatosa Artists workshop and dreamlike oil paintings by Tom Neuwirth.

CoPA’s 6th Annual Midwest Juried Photo Exhibition

The Coalition of Photographic Arts and the Walker’s Point Center for the Arts are pleased to present CoPA’s 6th Annual Midwest Juried Photo Exhibition, an annual opportunity for emerging and established artists from Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota to exhibit their contemporary photography.  This Year’s jurors are Annemarie Sawkins (former Associate Curator, Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University) and Graeme Reid (Assistant Director, Museum of Wisconsin Art).

About the Jurors:

Born in England, Annemarie Sawkins graduated from McGill University with a Master’s Degree and Ph.D. After 13 years as a curator at the Haggerty Museum of Art at Marquette University, she is now an independent curator and art consultant working on a major exhibition for the Ackland Art Museum, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which opens in February of 2013. Annemarie often writes for exhibition catalogues and is a frequent juror, having critiqued everything from artists portfolios to short films.

1st Annual Harry Kemp Photography Exhibit | Wisconsin Black Historical Society/Museum

The 1st Annual Harry Kemp Photography Exhibit will be held at the Wisconsin Black Historical Society/Museum, opening on November 30th, 2012 from 5-8 p.m. The Museum is looking for local photographers to exhibit their work, and enjoy an evening of fellowship and networking with other photographers. Harry Kemp’s work will also be on display.

The 1st Annual Harry Kemp Photography Exhibit will be held at the Wisconsin Black Historical Society/Museum, opening on November 30th, 2012 from 5-8 p.m. The Museum is looking for local photographers to exhibit their work, and enjoy an evening of fellowship and networking with other photographers. Harry Kemp’s work will also be on display.

 For over fifty years Harry Kemp was the eyes of Milwaukee's African-American community, documenting people, places and events through the medium of photography. ”If it happened and was important, Harry photographed it.”  Kemp, who passed away on September 29, 2011, left a lasting impact as he chronicled Milwaukee history through, according to his sister Yvonne Kemp “easily a million photos.”

CoPA Welcomes Kristyna Wentz-Graff to speak at Schmooze

CoPA welcomes photojournalist Kristyna Wentz-Graff from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, who will speak on the importance of storytelling in photography. Kristyna specializes in long-form documentary form, where capturing a story in each image is crucial. Telling a story also holds a crucial place in much fine art photography. Kristyna was also arrested at Madison's Occupy protests and will no doubt have some stories to tell about that as well.

CoPA Milwaukee is excited to welcome Kristyna Wentz-Graff as speaker for the October Schmooze!

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel photojournalist Kristyna Wentz-Graff is passionate about telling stories from her local community. With an emphasis on social and cultural issues, she’s delved into the lives of those who are often overlooked. She’s reported on a wide array of topics such as Milwaukee County’s substandard and dangerous housing conditions for people with mental illness, the adverse effects of the Iraq war on children of soldiers, investigating child deaths in the Milwaukee County foster care system,  and exposing fraud in the day care system.

Prior to joining the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in October 2005, she worked at The Post-Crescent (Appleton, WI), The Grand Rapids Press (MI) and freelanced for The Orange County Register. She graduated from California State University-Fullerton with a degree in Mass Communications.

Announcing CoPA’s 6th Annual Midwest Juried Exhibition

This juried exhibition is open to all photography artists who reside in Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota or Michigan, who may submit up to four entries with a $35, non-refundable entry fee. There is no fee for active/paid CoPA members; this is considered a membership benefit. Entrants must be a current paid member as of Oct 15, 2012 in order to qualify for the member submission fee waiver. New memberships after Oct 15, will not qualify for the fee waiver.

Exhibition Jurors: Graeme Reid, Annemarie Sawkins

Graeme Reid - Born in Scotland, Graeme Reid graduated from the University of Glasgow and Indiana State University with Master’s degrees in 1990 and 1993 respectively. With nineteen years experience in arts management/curatorial work he is currently Assistant Director at the Museum of Wisconsin Art having previously worked at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center (Sheboygan, WI), the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette (IN) and the Swope Art Museum (Terre Haute, IN). Over the years he has curated over 120 group and solo exhibitions as well as worked on the development and installation of institutional collections. An experienced judge on a local, regional and national level and award winning writer on the arts, he has taught art history and the humanities at ISU and Purdue University and is a regular guest lecturer at various Wisconsin institutions.

Be CoPA's Featured Artist at an ART Milwaukee ART Jamboree

CoPA is partnering with ART Milwaukee to bring great photographs to the community at their ART Jamborees. With the help of other local organizations, these social experiences bring the work of featured artists to thousands each month at different locations throughout the city.

Member photographer Martha Coaty was CoPA's Featured Artist at the ART Milwaukee ART Jamboree on Saturday, May 19 at Milwaukee Athletic Club, 758 North Broadway in Downtown Milwaukee. For this event, ART Milwaukee partnered with info* Magazine for their 10 year anniversary party, which featured live painting, DJ's and live music, a food sampling from area restaurants and galleries by local artists. The festivities attracted over 2,000 people.

Member Exhibition: Suzanne Garr at Delafield Arts Center and Art & Soul Gallery

CoPA Member Suzanne Garr is currently showing work in two area photography exhibitions. She is the solo photographer in the Juried Exhibition for this quarter at the Delafield Arts Center and will be involved with the Art Walk on May 18 & 19. Garr also has work at the Art & Soul Gallery in Milwaukee that will be a part of the upcoming MARN Treasure Hunt event on Saturday, May 12.

CoPA Member Suzanne Garr is currently showing work in two area photography exhibitions. She is the solo photographer in the Juried Exhibition for this quarter at the Delafield Arts Center and will be involved with the Art Walk on May 18 & 19. Annual CoPA Members' Show Open through Saturday, May 12th

CoPA's Seventh Annual Members' Exhibition is open through May 12th with regular gallery hours at 262 East Menomonee in the Third Ward, across from Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD).The exhibition spans the gamut of photography: natural and urban landscapes, fantasy, travel, digital manipulation, black and white close-ups, psychological portraits, mixed media, and much more.

CoPA's Seventh Annual Members' Exhibition opened with a reception on Gallery Night at 262 East Menomonee in the Third Ward, just across from Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD). This year, the Members' Show features 113 regional artists. The exhibition will be on display with regular gallery hours from April 20 to May 12, 2012.

The exhibition spans the gamut of photography: natural and urban landscapes, fantasy, travel, digital manipulation, black and white close-ups, psychological portraits, mixed media, and much more. CoPA’s members include well-established professional photographers, college students and amateurs. Some experiment fearlessly; others are consummate craftsmen, committed to traditional processes. All are united by a passion for fine art photography.

His Last Roll of Kodachrome

CoPA member Erik Ljung is admittedly shy but having a camera in front of his face is his good excuse to interact with strangers he might otherwise be reluctant to approach. His recently exhibited his work, using his last roll of Kodachrome film.

CoPA member Erik Ljung is admittedly shy but having a camera in front of his face is his good excuse to interact with strangers he might otherwise be reluctant to approach.

“My camera is the perfect excuse to put myself in sticky situations,” the 27-year old photographer said. “I use my camera as a tool. I study photography and photographers all day, every day – it consumes me – but I rarely photograph without a purpose.”
